It was the Riders who drove the field first on their first time with the ball. They couldn’t find the endzone however, leading to a field-goal and 3-0 lead.

Two deep passes to Clark Barnes from Jake Maier led to a quick touchdown from the Stamps to put them up 7-3 with 57-seconds to go in the first quarter.

That was the score following one quarter of play.

The Stamps extended their lead early in the second-quarter as Maier found Cam Echols in the back of the endzone on a third-down gamble to make the score 14-3.

The Stampeders fumbled deep in Rider territory as they were looking to add to the lead, turning it over with 2:25 to go in the third. The Riders were unable to do anything with the possession and punted the ball away.

Maier found Marken Michel for a 67-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter to make the score 24-6.

The Riders countered with their first major of the game on their next drive to cut the Stampeders lead to 24-12 after an unsuccessful two-point convert.

The Lions started with the ball on Friday night in Vancouver. After a couple of first downs the Stampeders forced a punt thanks to a Julian Howsare sack on second down.

The Stampeders were driving into Lions territory but fumbled the football which was recovered by the BC and returned to the Calgary 22-yardline. The Lions would open the scoring with a field goal to make it 3-0.

That would be the only scoring heading into the second-quarter.

Howsare got another second-down sack to stall the first Lions drive of the quarter and get the ball back at the Calgary 35-yardline following a Leo’s punt.

Calgary ran the ball effectively on their next drive leading to a 10-yard touchdown pass from Jake Maier to Ishmael Hyman to give the Stampeders the 7-3 lead.

The Lions moved the ball through the air leading to another field-goal, giving them the 9-8 lead with 6:49 to go in the third-quarter.

BC hit for a big passing play of 50-yards to get down to the Stampeders 32-yardline as the game rolled into the fourth-quarter.

That drive was ended with a 15-yard field goal to make the Lions lead 12-8 with 11:49 remaining in the game.

Maier was picked-off on the next Stamps drive and the interception was taken all the way back for a touchdown to make the score 19-8.

The Lions swatted down a backwards screen pass on the next drive and scooped the fumble for their second-straight defensive touchdown to make the score 26-8 with 8:21 to go.

The Stamps were intercepted again on the next drive. The Lions returned the ball to the Calgary 18-yardline. The Lions go a field goal out of that drive to extend their lead to 29-8.

Matt Shiltz came in at quarterback for Calgary and found Reggie Begelton from 53-yards out on his first throw of the season to cut the Lions lead to 29-14.

The Lions tacked on their sixth field goal of the night following a Stampeders onside kick to make the score 32-15 with one-minute remaining.

That would be the final score.

1. Us

The Stampeders enter Week 18 looking at a must-win game. Calgary finds themselves five-points back of the BC Lions, who they face this week, with four games remaining and a game in hand. A win this week would also give the Stamps the head-to-head season series in the case of a tie at the end of the season. Calgary is currently on an 0-5-1 slide in their last six games but are coming off a bye week in Week 17.

2. Them

The Lions look to snap a two-game losing streak when they host the Stamps on Friday night. BC sits in third in the West Division, but has Calgary, Edmonton and the potential of a Hamilton crossover in their rearview mirror and are just one point back of Saskatchewan for a home playoff game in the West Semi-Final.

3. Head to Head

This is the third and final regular season meeting between these two clubs. They split the first two games 26-17 in Vancouver and 25-24 in Calgary with both home teams winning. Jake Maier has done well against the Lions this season throwing for 646 yards and 5 touchdowns this year.

4. Fast Facts

Calgary slotback Reggie Begelton heads into this week’s game 79 receiving yards shy of a second consecutive 1,000-yard season and the third of his career. Begelton established a career high of 1,444 receiving yards in 2019 and had 1,119 yards a year ago.

In addition, Begelton needs 60 yards to crack Calgary’s all-time top 10 in receiving yards.

‘A Great Rivalry’ https://www.stampeders.com/2024/09/18/a-great-rivalry/ https://www.stampeders.com/2024/09/18/a-great-rivalry/#respond Wed, 18 Sep 2024 20:56:38 +0000 https://www.stampeders.com/?p=487269 It just means more.

The Stampeders host the rival Saskatchewan Roughriders on Friday night at McMahon Stadium at 7:30 p.m. in the latest edition of the fierce prairie rivalry.

The Stamps are 4-8-1 following their 19-19 tie with Montreal last week and are just two-points back of the Riders for the final playoff spot in the west with five games remaining.

Neither team has been in the win column latelyboth teams are 0-4-1 in their last five gamesbut both still have a chance to control their own destiny heading into the playoffs.

Linebacker Micah Teitz says it’s a huge opportunity for his club.

“The winner gets a leg up on each other in the standings for the time being so we’re hoping to be that team,” he said. “For the whole team we know this is a big game.”

Teitz played four seasons for the Green and White registering 158 tackles in 45 games. He has seven defensive tackles to go along with six on special teams in his first campaign with the Stamps.

“I’ve had this one circled for a while now,” said Teitz. “I had good times there, have good friends on the team still. There’s a little more on the line for me personally and where we are at in the season so it’s a big one.”

The Calgary native and former U of C Dino says since he has been in the league it seems like the Stampeders and Riders have met in meaningful games and that has helped keep this deep-rooted rivalry going.

“It seems like every year since 2018 the Riders vs Calgary game is always late in the season, always after Labour Day when the playoffs mean a lot,” he explained.I think it’s really good for the CFL, it’s a great rivalry that we have and I’m looking forward to being on the good side of it in this game.”

RB Dedrick Mills – 14 rushes, 65-yards

REC Reggie Begelton – eight receptions, 123-yards

DB Branden Dozier – eight tackles

The Stamps forced a two-and-out on the opening drive of the game for Edmonton and just like last week, the Elks boomed a punt single, this week it was a 72-yard rouge to make the score 1-0.

Logan Bonner came out for his first career CFL start.

He completed two-of-three passes on his first drive leading to a Stampeders field goal to make the score 3-1 Calgary early.

Edmonton added another punt single on their next drive to make the score 3-2.

The Stamps were moving the ball nicely on their second drive before being intercepted in the endzone to give the ball back to the Elks.

The score was 3-2 Calgary following one quarter of play.

The Elks hit on a 60-yard pass for a touchdown early in the second quarter to make the score 10-3 following a successful two-point conversion.

Jalen Philpot made a couple of first down plays on the Stamps first possession of the second quarter. That led to a 42-yard field goal from Rene Paredes to put the score at 10-6 Elks with 10:14 remaining in the half.

Edmonton countered with a major with 6:44 until halftime to make the score 17-6.

The Elks  added three more with just over a minute until the break to take a 20-6 lead.

Edmonton wasn’t done there as they grabbed their second interception of the game and immediately were in excellent field position for another score before the half. They put up another field goal to make the score 23-6 going into halftime.

The Stampeders were picked off again by the Green and Gold on their first drive of the second half, but the Elks were forced to punt by the Stamps defence.

Bonner hit Reggie Begelton with a 26-yard pass to move Calgary into the Elks side of midfield which resulted in their third field goal of the game to make the score 23-9.

The Elks added another touchdown to kick off the fourth quarter and make the score 30-9.

The Stamps went for it on third down from the Edmonton 25-yardline with just over nine minutes remaining but were intercepted for the fourth time of the night, turning the ball over deep in Elks territory.

Defensive lineman Mike Rose picked off McLeod Bethel-Thompson and took it back 83-yards to the endzone for his first career major to get the Stampeders within two touchdowns, 30-16, with 5:59 to go.

Edmonton put all thoughts of a comeback to bed with another touchdown drive to for a final score of 37-16.

1. Us

The Stampeders are looking to snap a three-game losing streak when they head north to battle the Edmonton Elks on Saturday night. Calgary is 4-7 this season sitting in a tie for fourth in the CFL West Division with the Elks. They are coming off a 35-20 loss to the Green and Gold this past Monday in the Labour Day Classic. QB Logan Bonner will get the start for the Stamps, his first of the season. Calgary is also still looking for their first road win of the year, they are 0-5 so far.

2. Them

The Elks have won four of five since making a coaching change and could get within one point of the final playoff spot with a win this weekend. Look for McLeod Bethel-Thompson to get another start despite Tre Ford’s improving from his previous injury. Bethel-Thompson threw for 486 yards and three touchdowns in last week’s win.

3. Head to Head

This is the second of three meetings between these two clubs over the final nine weeks of the CFL season. With Edmonton winning last week, the Stamps need a big win to push the season series to game three as whoever wins two of three could play a massive factor for a playoff spot as we come down the stretch. The final game of the season series will take place Oct. 12 in Calgary.

1. Us

The Stampeders enter the Labour Day Classic having lost two in a row and looking to bounce back against their long-time rival. Calgary is 4-6 on the season and sits fourth in the West Division just two points back of both BC and Winnipeg and three points away from the first place Saskatchewan Roughriders. Standings wise, this is the most important LDC in many years.

2. Them

The Elks fell to the Montreal Alouettes last week but had rattled off three straight wins before that to put them right back in the playoff conversation. Edmonton trails Calgary by just two points heading into this all important Labour Day showdown at McMahon Stadium.

3. Head to Head

This is the first of three meetings between these two over the final nine weeks of the CFL season. The two teams split the season series last year with Calgary winning the LDC at home 35-31 and then Edmonton winning the rematch a week later by a score of 25-23.

4. Fast Facts

Calgary is looking to maintain its recent Labour Day momentum as the Stampeders have prevailed in 10 of 11 holiday-Monday meetings with Edmonton since 2012. Overall, the Stampeders have won 14 of 18 regular-season games against Edmonton since Dave Dickenson took over as head coach prior to the 2016 season and are 32-8 in 40 meetings dating back to 2009.

Since 1982 and for all but two seasons since 1969, the Stampeders have faced their provincial rivals at McMahon on the first Monday of September.

Calgary and Edmonton have played 58 times on Labour Day since 1959 and the Stamps lead the series 31-26-1. Including games against other opponents, a total of 68 Labour Day games have been played in Calgary over the years, with the Stamps posting a 41-26-1 record.

The game will be preceded by a CF-18 Hornet flyover, a ceremonial flag party and a performance of the national anthem by the Royal Canadian Air Force Band. Individual members of the Canadian Armed Forces will also take the field alongside the Stampeders’ starting defence as the players are introduced.

Following the game, members of the military will be on the field to meet with Stampeders players and pose for a group photo.

As part of the tribute to the military, part of the proceeds from 50/50 sales will go to Support our Troops and the Calgary Military Family Resource Centre.

5. Who’s Where

6. Players to Watch:

Stamps: QB Tommy Stevens: When it’s Tommy Time the Stampeders are usually successful. Calgary’s short-yardage QB leads the CFL in touchdowns with eight heading into Week 13. Stevens had a touchdown in last year’s classic which was part of a 22-point fourth-quarter that guided the Stamps to a comeback win.

Elks: RB’s: Edmonton has developed quite the running back room with the emergence of Javon Leake not only as a returner, but a dangerous running back as well. With Leake out of the lineup last week, Kevin Brown stepped up in a big way putting up 105-yards on the ground against Montreal. Also making an impact for the Elks is rookie tailback Justin Rankin who put up 108 rushing yards of his own when he got the start two weeks ago against Hamilton.

7. Quotable

“I definitely want to keep the winning streak alive over here on Monday. It’s nice to be playing for the hometown team now.” – Adam Konar on playing for the Stamps in this year’s Battle of Alberta.

The Stampeders go head-to-head with the Edmonton Elks for the 59th time in the Labour Day Classic on Monday at 4 p.m., and will be donning their black uniforms which have become a staple in the Battle of Alberta edition of the LDC.

Calgary has worn the black jerseys on occasion since they were first introduced in 1994.

Stampeders president and former offensive lineman Jay McNeil was in the locker room when the jerseys were first revealed to the players ahead of their 1994 Labour Day matchup with Edmonton.

The quick change was intended to provide a spark for the club, giving them an edge before they took to the field to do battle with their rivals from the north, who ended their season by a score of 29-15 in the 1993 West Final the year before.

McNeil says a switch was flipped when the team was surprised with the jerseys hanging in their stalls.

“When the team went out for warmups in the red jerseys and came back in after and the black jerseys were in the stalls the intensity in the locker-room went up ten times,” he explained. “It changed everything. We came out and beat the crap out of them. It sort of continued that way ever since then. It’s a big game, the intensity just really ramps up when you’re in the black jersey.”

Now, the tradition extends from the field to the stands.

For the second year in a row the organization is calling on fans attending the provincial tilt to wear black Stamps gear of their own, creating a blackout at McMahon Stadium.

Including the regular season and post-season, this year’s Labour Day Classic marks the 49th time in franchise history the Stampeders will wear black jerseys. The Stampeders have an all-time record of 36-12 while wearing black, good for a .750 winning percentage.

The stakes couldn’t be higher for both teams on Monday with the Stamps just three points back of first in the CFL West Division and the Elks breathing down their necks trailing them by just two points.

“Rivalries come and go,” said McNeil. “Sometimes BC is a big rival when they are good, Saskatchewan is a big rival but Edmonton is always our rival.

“So it makes it exciting and then you layer in it’s going to be a bigger crowd, (and) the flyover is happening. As a player you know it’s a huge event and as a fan it’s a huge event.

“Generally, it’s a game that you need to win. We need to fill the stadium. It’s a giant game for us, we need to stay ahead of Edmonton, it’s a really big game.”

The fans can expect the gameday experience to be ramped up for this iteration of the Labour Day Classic.

“What I think is cool about the Labour Day game is it’s really meant for everybody,” explained McNeil. “We’ve got the Gridiron Gardens going beforehand that has activations for kids and we have five-dollar Heinekens for adults. We’re going to have entertainment for all ages.

“Then, during the game, game presentation will be geared to give everyone something and we have the halftime performance which we don’t do every game. Then, we add in the military appreciation with the flyover and everyone loves the flyover.

“For the regular-season games, it’s tough to get the tailgaters in for kickoff which I understand, but for Labour Day they are in their seats at kickoff because they want to see the flyover from the stadium. It’s pretty cool – there is a lot of electricity at kickoff.”

Calgary falls to 4-5 on the season and 0-5 on the road.

Cam Echols, Peyton Logan and Tommy Stevens had touchdowns in the loss.

STAT PACK

Peyton Logan – 11 carries, 61-yards, one touchdown

Reggie Begelton – eight receptions, 104-yards

Demerio Houston – five tackles, one interception

The Stamps managed a point from a punt single on their first drive of the game on Friday night following a couple of first downs.

The Argos responded with a touchdown through the air on their first drive to make the score 7-1.

Calgary once again moved the ball well through the air with Jake Maier hitting Reggie Begelton for a deep ball and then Cam Echols came around the edge to finish off a touchdown driving making it 8-7 Stamps.

That would the score following one quarter of play.

The Stamps continued to march the field while on offence, however, Rene Paredes missed his first field-goal of the season to keep the score 8-7.

Demerio Houston notched his fourth interception of the year late in the half following a Micah Awe deflection. His ballhawk skills set the Stamps offence up with the ball in Argo territory and didn’t take long to find the endzone as Peyton Logan pushed it in from a couple yards out to make the score 15-7 going into the half.

Entering the third frame, rookie DB Bentlee Sanders forced a fumble with the Argonauts deep in Stampeders territory which was recovered by veteran Cam Judge to get the ball back for his offence.

Toronto recovered a fumble of their own on the Stamps drive getting the ball back at nearly the same place they had previously turned the ball over.

The Argonauts added a field goal to their score to make it 15-10.

Toronto then returned a punt for a touchdown and added the two-point conversion to make the score 18-15 halfway through the third quarter.

The Argos put three more on the board late in the third to make it 21-15 heading into the final frame.

Calgary answered early in the fourth with Begelton powering his way inside the Argonaut five-yardline, dragging four members of the Boatmen with him. Then it was Tommy Stevens who punched the ball in to make it 22-21 Stamps.

Toronto recorded a pick-six on the next Stampeder drive regaining the lead 29-22 following another successful two-point conversion.

The Stamps were stopped on third-and-short in their own end giving the Argonauts great field position halfway through the fourth quarter which led to another field goal to make it 32-22.

Calgary answered with a field goal of their own to make it 32-25 with under four minutes remaining in the game.

The Argos put together a strong drive late resulting in a touchdown to go up 39-25. That would be the final score.

The Stamps defence gave up zero points in the second half with the Argonauts only scoring coming from a punt-single.

After Toronto scored a single on the opening kickoff the Stampeders got to work offensively. They moved the ball down-field with two deep passes to Reggie Begelton but on the second reception, the Argonauts forced a fumble and recovered it on their own 11-yardline.

James Vaughters came up with a sack halfway through the first-quarter and Cam Echols followed it up with a 23-yard punt return to put the Stamps on the Toronto side of half to start their next drive.

The Argonauts found the endzone again with 46-seconds to go until halftime to put them up 22-6 heading into the break.

Both teams came out of the break playing strong defence. Julian Howsare picked up the fourth Stampeder sack of the night. The only score was a punt single from the Argonauts to make the score 23-6 Toronto heading into the fourth-quarter.

Tiavassue fell in love with the game thanks to a fellow Samoan, Troy Polamalu, of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

“I wanted to play safety so bad just because of him,” he explained. “He’s Samoan and I’m Samoan so I wanted to be like him. I started playing. Obviously, I was too tall to play safety. My hips weren’t like his so they moved me to running back. So I played running back a whole lot growing up and moved to tight end when I got to college.”

With the Heritage Night game coming up on Sunday, the Tiavaasue says it is good to get eyes on the CFL from cultures that maybe aren’t around the game of football as much.

“Just beyond Canada, I think it’s good,” he said. “Obviously, we’ve got Bailey Devine-Scott on the team and Cody (Grace), me obviously,  and Toshi (Sato) but from outside this world there’s a lot of guys like us running around that don’t even know that this sport is an opportunity. Everybody plays rugby where we’re from. So,  it’s good, it’s definitely important to get the game out there.”

The Stampeders took the global running back fourth overall in this past Global Draft and he says he’s loving his new city.

“It’s good, it’s different,” said Tiavassue. “It’s like a big city, but it’s like a small city too. So I like that aspect of it because I kind of like small cities, but it’s big enough to go downtown. It’s got Banff and all that. I like the outdoor stuff so being here has been good.”

Despite not being from a historically football crazy part of the world, Tiavassue says his friends and family have all hopped on the Stamps bandwagon despite him not cracking a gameday roster quite yet.

“My whole family, my close friends, follow the team,” he said with a smile. “They keep asking me, you know, why are you not playing. I just tell them that’s common. Just gotta be patient and work for a little bit.”

On Sunday the Red and White are hosting their second annual Heritage Night game as the team celebrates the city’s cultural diversity. This inclusive event is designed to welcome new Canadians to the Stamps family, offering them a chance to learn about the game while enjoying an immersive cultural experience. The evening gives Calgarians the opportunity to connect and celebrate the unique heritage that makes Calgary truly special while taking in the great game of Canadian football.

Heritage Night activities begin pre-game in the Gridiron Gardens starting at 3 p.m.

Located on the grass field immediately south of the stadium, the Gridiron Gardens will feature a Heritage Night Market where fans can check out amazing multi-cultural performances, art and other cultural items from around the world.

Sunday’s game will also be broadcast on the radio in Punjabi featuring Ranjit Sidhu, Dan Sidhu, Savleen Jassar and Coach Harp. The game will be broadcast on Radio Sur Sangam 94.7 FM.

In addition, the Stampeders will play host to nearly 100 new Canadian citizens on Sunday.

The newest Canadians will then be part of the pre-game flag ceremony and anthem before taking their place in the stands to watch the game.

Halftime entertainment will feature performances by the Guava Jam steel drum band, the Brazilian flare of Samba Swing and the Nachda Punjab Bhangra Academy, alongside Calgary’s Finest Dholis.

Injury Report

It hasn’t been easy in terms of injuries for the Stampeders the last few weeks and now you can add cornerstone offensive lineman Zack Williams to the list.

Head coach and general manager Dave Dickenson spoke on the injuries his group is facing following practice.

“It’s muscle but it doesn’t mean it’s not serious,” he said. “Zack’s a tough guy, he assured me he heals fast so we will see what happens.”

“We do have a little bit longer of a week,” he continued. “Hopefully we can get some (healthy) guys in there and have the best group we can.”

Flush It

The loss to Ottawa certainly wasn’t expected from this group as a short week and only one practice may have played a factor in the performance. With a full practice week upcoming Dickenson and the Stampeders want to wipe that game and focus fully on a tough Argonauts group.

“Probably best to not look back anymore,” Dickenson said. “That was a game we needed to watch and then flush. We did learn from it and now how do we respond, we will see. But probably no reason to look back because it just wasn’t us.”

Heritage Night

Sunday’s tilt also marks the club’s second annual Heritage Night game featuring a Heritage Night Market pre-game in the Gridiron Gardens celebrating the city’s rich cultural mosaic. This inclusive event is designed to welcome new Canadians to the Stamps family, offering them a chance to learn about the game while enjoying an immersive cultural experience.

In advance of this special night, Stamps TV Punjabi host Taranjot Vining brought an array of Punjabi dishes for the offensive linemen to try!

Quick Notes

The Stampeders will proudly play host to nearly 100 new Canadian citizens at Sunday’s Canadian Football League game as part of Heritage Night at McMahon Stadium. They will become citizens before the game in an on-field ceremony before taking part in the pre-game flag ceremony.

The Stampeders have also donated 1,200 tickets to Calgary based evacuees of Jasper for Sunday’s game.
