Before we get under way with the 2017 draft, let’s have a look back at who the Stamps selected a year ago.
Round 1, 6th pick, 6th overall
Alex Singleton – linebacker – Montana State
Singleton played all 18 games for the Stamps in his rookie season. He started the year as a special-teamer and situational player on defence but his quick progress allowed him to claim the starting middle linebacker job by Labour Day. During the regular season, the hard-hitting Singleton racked up 65 defensive tackles including five tackles for a loss, three forced fumbles, a fumble recovery, four knockdowns and nine special-teams tackles. He started both the Western Final and Grey Cup, recording 11 tackles, a knockdown and a fumble recovery.
Round 2, 15th overall
Juwan Brescacin – receiver – Northern Illinois
Brescacin saw limited action in seven games but the lanky receiver showed raw skills and great promise. Though he finished the regular season with just four catches for 51 yards, one of those receptions accounted for one of the top highlights of the 2016 as he made a spectacular one-handed grab in the Sept. 17 home game against Ottawa. Brescacin also played in the Western Final and Grey Cup.
Round 4, 33rd overall
Roman Grozman – offensive lineman – Concordia
As a mid-round pick and a player who started football relatively late in life, Grozman was viewed as a long-term project. However, he showed enough progress in camp that he got the call to start at centre for the Stamps’ season-opener when veteran Pierre Lavertu was unavailable due to injury. Grozman saw action as a reserve in six more games before his season ended when he suffered a concussion in the Labour Day rematch.
Round 5, 38th overall
Jean-Philippe Bolduc – defensive back – Laval
Bolduc attended training camp with the Stamps and was among the final round of camp cuts. He went on to sign with the Ottawa RedBlacks and played in eight games plus the Eastern Final and Grey Cup.
Round 5, 42nd overall
Pierre-Luc Caron – long snapper – Laval
Caron earned the Stamps’ long-snapping job out of training camp and played every game of the 2016 season.
Round 6, 51st overall
Michael Kashak – defensive lineman – McMaster
Kashak attended training camp in Calgary before returning to McMaster to finish out his eligibility. He was a first-team Canadian and conference all-star for the Marauders in 2016 after leading Ontario University Athletics with 11.5 sacks. He re-signed with the Stamps in March.
Round 8, 68th overall
Quinn Horton – defensive lineman – Simon Fraser
Horton was released by the Stamps at the end of training camp and spent some time on the BC Lions’ practice roster. He was released by BC but the Lions re-signed him this past March.
