Calgary Comeback

After trailing 22-6 at the half, the Calgary Stampeders had a huge second-half to snatch a 27-23 victory from the Toronto Argonauts.

The Stamps defence gave up zero points in the second half with the Argonauts only scoring coming from a punt-single.

The Stampeders move to 4-0 at home and 4-4 on the season with the win.

Cam Echols and Marken Michel had the two Stampeders touchdowns in the victory.

Rene Paredes has now made 25-straight field-goals with four against Toronto.

After Toronto scored a single on the opening kickoff the Stampeders got to work offensively. They moved the ball down-field with two deep passes to Reggie Begelton but on the second reception, the Argonauts forced a fumble and recovered it on their own 11-yardline.

James Vaughters came up with a sack halfway through the first-quarter and Cam Echols followed it up with a 23-yard punt return to put the Stamps on the Toronto side of half to start their next drive.

The drive would eventually stall leading to a punt.

The Argonauts put together a touchdown drive on their ensuing possession to lead 8-0 after the first quarter.

Calgary got on the board with a 51-yard field-goal from Rene Paredes to make the score 8-3.

Veteran d-lineman Mike Rose came up with the Stamps third sack of the half to get the ball back for his offence with 7:10 remaining in the second-quarter.

Toronto picked off the Stampeders on the next drive and brought the ball back to the Stamps seven-yardline.

They scored on the next play to make the score 15-3.

Paredes added three more with 2:16 remaining in the half, this time for 43-yards out, to make it 15-6.

The Argonauts found the endzone again with 46-seconds to go until halftime to put them up 22-6 heading into the break.

Both teams came out of the break playing strong defence. Julian Howsare picked up the fourth Stampeder sack of the night. The only score was a punt single from the Argonauts to make the score 23-6 Toronto heading into the fourth-quarter.

The Stamps found the endzone on the second play of the fourth-quarter when Jake Maier found Marken Michel in the endzone 15-yards out to make it 23-13.

Calgary added a single point on the kickoff following the touchdown to make the score 23-14.

After Kelon Thomas grabbed the fifth Stampeder sack of the night forcing a punt, Maier found Echols for a spectacular 40-yard touchdown catch to make the score 23-21 with 10:23 remaining.

The Stampeders defence got the ball back for the offence once again. Following a 27-yard pass from Maier to Michel down to the Argo 38-yardline, Paredes hit a 44-yard field-goal to give the Stampeders the 24-23 lead with 2:05 remaining.

Rose came up with his second sack of the game to push the Argos to second-and-21. Toronto gained ten on second-down leading to a third-down gamble. Howsare got his hands up to bat an attempted pass down and getting the ball back for Calgary with 1:09 remaining.

Demerio Houston ended the game with an interception to seal the 27-23 Stampeders win.

The Stamps are in Toronto to finish off a home-and-home Aug. 9 at 5:30 p.m. Then the Red and White return to McMahon to take on the Ottawa Redblacks for Country Night on Thursday, Aug. 15.
